FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Today begins Catholic Schools Week – a time to celebrate the long history of Catholic education in our nation along with its impact on so many areas of our society.

The week is also a time to “tell the good news” of Catholic education in our communities so that all will know how much of a gift it is to so many. Certainly Catholic education has changed in our lifetime. The days when men and women religious as well as priests were the primary teachers and administrators in our schools are almost over. That means that we have many dedicated lay women and men who staff classrooms and administration offices. As a result, the expense to educate children has significantly risen and, unfortunately, is beyond the means of many families who are desirous of a Catholic education for their children.

For a while now, I’ve had a dream to establish a scholarship fund for this purpose. Many of us have benefited from a Catholic education and know how much of a gift it has been to us. I have a very small scholarship fund that a few people have contributed to anonymously which, in turn, I use to assist families in need at either Cathedral Parish School or St. Joseph Academy. What I really hope to eventually do is have an annual fundraiser that will allow this fund to grow.  Maybe that can be accomplished in the not-too-distant future.

There is much to celebrate during this Catholic Schools Week. Open houses are scheduled at our schools for those who may be interested in learning more about what they have to offer you. And don’t forget, if you think you can’t afford it, our schools offer both McKay and Step-Up scholarships for those who are eligible. Ask our administrations about these opportunities, too.

Love, Father Tom
