From the Pastor’s Desk

For the second time in less than a year, our area has been devastated by a major hurricane. Many of the same areas of our community have been impacted by flooding as last year. Other areas, especially along the barrier islands, saw different impacts due in part to tornadoes.
We are “St. Augustine Strong” as we found out last year following Hurricane Matthew. This time we will just have to be “St. Augustine Stronger.” Many people I have talked to in the past few days are dazed from having to face another such event. But many whom I spoke with simply asked for prayers. So, let’s lift them up in prayer and be ready to offer assistance as we are able.

The St. Augustine Bureau of Catholic Charities is ready to offer hurricane assistance. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society will also be helping those most in need of recovery efforts. Other agencies – both private and government – will be available to assist in hurricane relief. But the most important relief we can offer is the ministry of presence – being present to those whose lives have been uprooted once more – with a smile, a hug and continued reassurance that we are here for them.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.                                                                                                                                                                   Take my yoke  upon you, and learn from me: for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden in light.” (Matthew
11:28-30, NRSV © 1991)
