From the Pastor’s Desk

The Church’s teaching on the sanctity of human life is well known. Unfortunately, it continues to be a
battleground, especially as it relates to abortion and the use of capital punishment. All life is sacred to God and,
therefore, must be reverenced as sacred to us.

Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, in 1977 Illinois Congressman Henry Hyde
sponsored legislation in the House of Representatives that would restrict the use of taxpayer money for abortion.
While provisions of the “Hyde Amendment” have changed over the years, the most basic part of it has not and it is
one of the few items of federal legislation that regularly receives bi-partisan support. Since it first became law, it
has been reenacted every year since then.

However, now the administration of President Biden is seeking to do away with the Hyde Amendment
permanently. It is critically important that Catholics send a strong message to the U.S. Congress in support of the
Hyde Amendment. Please consider signing the petition at NoTaxPayerAbortion.com. You might also consider
writing a letter or an email to your U.S. Senators and Congressional Representatives letting them know of your
support of the Hyde Amendment.

As Pope Francis has said, “The future of humanity does not lie solely in the hands of great leaders, the great
powers, and the elites. It is fundamentally in the hands of peoples and their ability to organize. It is in their hands,
which can guide with humility and conviction the process of change.” Please take a few minutes this week and
make your voice heard on Capitol Hill in defense of the sacredness of life.

Love,
Fr. Tom
