From the Pastor’s Desk

Today throughout the Universal Church is World Mission Sunday. It was first observed in 1927, promulgated by Pope Pius XI. The funds collected through use of the extra envelope for this day (or, if you use Faith Direct, the amount you designate for this collection) is sent to the Vatican’s Propaganda de Fide, better known as the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

A contribution of $25.00 will support a Church-designated catechist for a month in a remote area of Latin America without priests. A gift of $75.00 assists Sisters who care for orphaned children on the continent of Africa. A donation of $100.00 provides education and other costs for children in Catholic schools in Asia. Every gift is one which extends the mission of Christ through His Mystical Body the Church.

In his Message for World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis reminds us:

‘In the sacrifice of the cross, where the mission of Jesus is fully accomplished, God shows us that his love is for each and every one of us. He asks us to be personally willing to be sent, because he himself is Love, love that is always “on mission,” reaching out in order to give life.”

At one time, the Diocese of St. Augustine was dependent upon grants from the Propaganda de Fide. I hope that those who are able can make a generous donation to this year’s World Mission Sunday collection so that the Church’s mission in the name of her Lord and Savior will continue.

Love,

Fr. Tom
