From the Pastor’s Desk

Today is Catechetical Sunday, an observance that goes back to 1935 in the Church. It gives the parish community the opportunity to recognize those who teach the Catholic-Christian Faith in schools and religious education programs. However, it also acknowledges those who are the first teachers of the Faith to their children, namely parents.

This year’s theme is taken from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians: “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you” (1 Cor 11:23). Here the Apostle to the Gentiles is referring specifically to the sacred mystery that is the Sacrament of the Eucharist. However, all catechesis and formation in the Faith must be understood as a gift that is faithfully handed on to others. And so, whether it is catechists, religion teachers or parents and grandparents, these men and women are instruments through which others may encounter Christ and hear that invitation, “Come, follow me.”

On this Catechetical Sunday, please remember in your prayers all those who have the ministry of catechist and religion teacher in our parish and throughout the Church. May they grow in the Faith so that they might help others grow in it as well.

Love,

Fr. Tom
