Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Bishops, priests and deacons are the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion. However, as a commissioned Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, you will assist with the distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful. You may also be commissioned to distribute Holy Communion to the sick, homebound, nursing homes or hospital. You are required to be a fully initiated Catholic, having received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. In addition you must be at least 16 years of age. You must regularly attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. Special training classes are required in the Theology and Celebration of the Eucharist.

HOME BOUND, HOSPITAL, or NURSING HOME

This is an extension of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Visitation is usually done by a priest, deacon or Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. You will be additionally commissioned to distribute Holy Communion to those in the hospital. You are required to be a fully initiated Catholic, having received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. In addition you must be at least 16 years of age. You must regularly attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. Additional training is required for those who distribute Holy Communion to the hospitals. You will need to learn and understand the rites to be observed in the distribution of Communion to the sick and of taking Viaticum to the dying and guidance in procedures of pastoral care of the sick.

In addition you will be required to attend a Protecting God’s Children Workshop and pass a criminal background check. However, even if you are not an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, we can always use people to drive, follow-up and schedule. A criminal background check and attendance at a Protecting God’s Children workshop is required.
