A BLESSED PAST,
A BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Nearly 60 years ago, Bishop Joseph Hurley realized an ambitious vision from the Cathedral rectory at 35 Treasury Street in St. Augustine. In addition to the unique distinction of being America’s first Catholic parish, it is also where Bishop Hurley laid the foundation for the Florida Church we know today. During his tenure, Bishop Hurley opened 74 parishes, 100 schools and four Catholic hospitals, all to serve the Catholic faithful flooding to Florida during one of the state’s biggest population booms.

Sadly, the Cathedral rectory is far from the showplace it was when Bishop Hurley had it built in 1965. Our parish priests, and frequently the Bishop, live with inconveniences attributable to a nearly 60-year-old home. Poorly insulated and leaky windows, inefficient HVAC and electrical systems, and faulty plumbing, in addition to a poor delineation between work and living space, make the rectory a challenging place in which to live and work.

The A Blessed Past, A Building for our Future campaign will realize a humbler vision compared to Bishop Hurley’s, but equally important to a thriving local parish and world-renowned historic and pilgrimage site. This campaign will fund a renovation of the rectory that when complete will provide for the priests and staff who faithfully serve the Cathedral parish community, helping them do their jobs and properly stewarding the resources the parish has been provided.
