Letter from Fr. John Tetlow

Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as scripture has said, ‘Rivers of Living Water will flow from them.’”  By this he meant the Spirit, who those who believed in him were later to receive.  Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.  –John 7: 37-39

At the bottom of all Christian Reflections on the Christian Life is the rock solid conviction that God’s Spirit animates everything we are to do.  To receive the Holy Spirit we must slow down, to quiet our hearts and minds.  Then we turn our face to God, asking God to do with us what God did to the Apostles at Pentecost– to breathe the Spirit upon us.  Expect that God will honor what He most wants to do, to give His life to us, so we can live the life He created us to live.

The Holy Spirit makes the road to holiness clear and plain, but we must listen attentively.  The real tragedy is not that we don’t know what to do, but that we often don’t humbly submit to His guidance.  To ask His Will and then to submit to it is the way to peace and surety.

We receive peace in the storms of our lives.  The enemy of peace and surety of faith is worry, anxiety, fear, and lack of trust that God can send His Spirit at any given moment to heal us and free us from all anxiety.  All we have to do is ask and we are freed from anything that holds us back from completely possessing the Love of God.

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and to the ends of the earth.”  -Acts 1: 8
