From the Pastor’s Desk

“I believe in the Holy Spirit….” Every time we pray the words of the Creed, the Church professes this belief. Our common belief in the Holy Spirit as the Third Person of the Holy Trinity goes back to the earliest years of the Christian Church.

With so much commotion and confusion in the world (and this has been the case for all the centuries of the Church’s long history), how do we know the presence of the Holy Spirit? In the Nicene Creed, after saying the words above, we continue by professing that the Spirit is “the Lord and giver of life.” One way we can look for and be assured of the Spirit’s presence in the world is to look for and find all that is beautiful, good, true and honorable.

And when we are on fire – when we are passionate – about beauty, goodness, truth and honor in all aspects of life, then we are also assured that the Holy Spirit is living and active in our lives. Our witness to each of these is the work of the Spirit in us. But anything that speaks of selfishness or that puts others down cannot be the work of the Spirit. The great Prayer to the Holy Spirit helps us understand this: “Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created; and You will renew the face of the earth.” The work of creation and its renewal in the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s Death and Resurrection is the constant work and gift of the Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful; kindle in them – in us – the fire of your love.

Love,

Fr. Tom
