From the Pastor’s Desk

On the afternoon of October 3, 2020, after celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the tomb of Saint Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis signed the third encyclical of his pontificate. Entitled Fratelli Tutti – Italian for “All Brothers” – the papal letter to the flock of Christ asks each of us to ponder how we are building up relationships that provide new hope to all as well as ones that are built on charity and love.
In many respects, Pope Francis’ latest encyclical is very practical in its presentation. He challenges us to move beyond the “dark clouds over a closed world” to love in the name and after the example of Christ – a love that is “ever more open” and in which we form a universal communion, or fraternity.
As our Holy Father states, to do this each of us must rise above our own limitations so that we are promoting the good of persons, not of ideologies.
One sentence from Fratelli Tutti captures the essence of Pope Francis’ reflections:
“Jesus trusts in the best of the human spirit; with this parable [the Parable of the Good Samaritan],
he encourages us to persevere in love, to restore dignity to the suffering and to build a society worthy of the name”(FT, no. 71).
I hope you will take the opportunity to read our Holy Father’s latest solemn teaching to us, as well as take to heart his words which continue to echo those of
Christ our Lord and Savior.

Love,
Father Tom
